We got this Earlier this week!

Between yesterday and today, more tomatoes, cucumbers, winter/summer squash, pumpkins, bean and lettuce were planted. Yea! Thanks so much to all the volunteers- over 10 between yesterday and today

YESC at the garden

Today OMS’s YESC (YMCA Earth Service Corp) came and helped out in the garden. In less than an hour they got a few rows formed, a compost pile started and moved a good load of mushroom compost closer to its final home. Led by OMS teacher Paul Sausville and Josiah Crouch of the YMCA, the students were awesome help.

And 3 weeks later after finding my camera… soil at the Greenway Table had been fertilized and tilled, and some plants made it in the ground.

Happy Earth Day. Today we will be at the garden site from 2:30ish onward for information and some bed formation. We have some of the water money and will be getting a pump within the next couple of days. The Shade Tree Board is planting some trees today- one a Shiemmel’s Park just next to the garden. Join us for the celebration there at 2- then we walk to the garden.

If wondering on getting to the garden site. Parker St, behind Ocoee Middle: Lee’s baseball field is on the Ocoee side of Parker with Ocoee Middle’s football field on the opposing side. This is where you enter for the garden- it is down and on the right. You will see a huge plowed field

Friday was Arbor Day and Cleveland State Community College had an event where Mr. John Nestle of Chattanooga spoke about pruning and Cleveland’s Urban Forester, Mr. Dan Hartman, gave a tree walk (yea Suzanne!)

CSCC-The people who make things happen are socializing.

The wonderful Saint Herbert Lackey turned the soil at the land with his tractor yesterday. How perfect it is that he is a farmer and 40year retired principle?

Plowing the Land

Last Saturday, Graceworks, a church on the hill above McKay’s in Chattanooga, laid 15 4′x15′ raised beds for their community garden. My friend, Ryan Austin, and I were able to help out. Lee Business Student, Ms Stephanie, came as well.

Ryan, Stephanie, Larry and others smooth out donated soil.

look at this- I like the cross- food for people will come.

I saw seeds germinating yesterday as well! What a day I had.

The East Street Community Garden is having an organizational meeting on Saturday and The Greenway Table has a steering committee on Tuesday. We are working on some Rotary Grants that will potentially help with start up generals, a summer camp and fall curriculum connections.

Land in December. Why wasn't this here before?

So, it has been too long since I have typed for you all. Today, I remembered while speaking with my new friend Janchai that we like pictures and we do not like to read… Perhaps I am assuming that the various baby steps are not so exciting for everyone. Pictures are needed and I am adding some here from December and last week, but know that they are only the land at bare.

Skyland. That's actually the name of the file This is the sky from the land in December. God is pretty amazing.

I personally think they are beautiful but sure am excited about food and people on the land- yeah, thats right.

Land in February. Notice the bushes below the cedar trees are no longer in bloom.

Insurance is covered on the land. The Fillauer’s have unofficially said we can cross their land to access our land. We have to figure out water and are working on it. LuAnn Carey and Bradley Central High School have agreed to do our starts for The Greenway Table and CGI’s East Street Community Garden. The Bradley Co-op said today they would help me with some plants… now I gotta tell them what I want.

Now is the time where it will become quite obvious that I do not know much of anything and the plants will survive by the love of the land and the expertise of others. I am just a bridge. I got some Johnny’s seeds in the mail today!! It was unexpected and very exciting.

I here commit to take more pictures and make this approachable for anyone that would actually want to keep up with what is going on…. although, I am most certain that no one is yet at that point. This is fancy businesses… all of it. I know I wouldn’t be into reading all this if I was not writing it. Me taking more pictures means you’ll get pictures that follow me, not just The Greenway Table, but I try for most of what I do to be connected to sustainable living.
